What we ask on the call

• Where the vehicle is. Street and cross street, the lot, or the highway and last exit; the 101's exits are numbered by the mile.
• Year, make and model, and the drivetrain - front-, rear-, all- or four-wheel drive, or electric. That decides wheel-lift or flatbed.
• What happened. Would not start, quit on the road, collision, stuck, flat, keys locked in.
• Where it should go. If you do not know yet, say so and we settle it first.

Which truck comes

A two-wheel-drive car, pickup or van usually rides on the wheel-lift: the boom picks up the drive axle, wheel straps cinch the tires, and the other axle rolls behind the truck. The drive end gets checked first: drag a front-wheel-drive car by its front wheels, as AAA's comparison notes, and the transmission can be damaged.

All-wheel-drive, four-wheel-drive and electric vehicles, anything low or unable to roll, and motorcycles - chocked, strapped by the frame, never on the center stand - go on the flatbed: the bed tilts to the ground, the winch line brings the vehicle up, and all four tires ride off the road. The manufacturers' reasons are under flatbed towing for all-wheel-drive and electric vehicles.

Not every call ends with a hook. A battery down about 30 percent at 32°F, AAA's figure, on one of the valley's occasional freezing mornings, a tire cut on a curb, keys on the seat: these are roadside assistance for a dead battery, flat or lockout, and the truck carries a jump pack, a jack and a lockout kit. When the vehicle cannot be made drivable where it sits, that is emergency towing at any hour.

We are light-duty - cars, SUVs, pickups, vans and motorcycles - and if a job is beyond a light-duty truck's tow rating we say so on the phone.

US 101 has nine exits through Orcutt and Santa Maria, from 165 at Clark Avenue to 175, where the 166 splits east and the freeway crosses the Santa Maria River into San Luis Obispo County, with Union Valley Parkway, Santa Maria Way, Betteravia, Stowell, Main Street, Donovan and Broadway between. A breakdown at any of them is a shoulder pickup with traffic passing at speed.

The 166 is Main Street in town and West Main to Guadalupe. East of the 101 it follows the Cuyama River through the canyon with the next services 52 miles on at New Cuyama, and it has closed for mudslides and flooding in early 2023, for flash flooding on September 19, 2024, and for grass fires. A breakdown out there in July, when New Cuyama's average high is 94.6°F, is a long wait, so say the last mile marker and whether you have water.

Broadway is the 135, the western bypass of the 101: up from Los Alamos as Bell Street, a shared stretch with Highway 1 south of Orcutt, then north through Orcutt and past the Santa Maria Town Center at Broadway and Main to the freeway at exit 173. Betteravia Road, exit 169, runs past the Enos Ranch and Crossroads lots to Broadway.

Highway 1 leaves that overlap for the Vandenberg main gate, about 17.6 miles from town, and from its other end runs northwest to Guadalupe and up the inland side of the dunes to Grover Beach; it flooded between Division Street and Oso Flaco Road in January 2023 and closed from Black Road to Solomon Road on February 4, 2024.

Field roads, sand and the fog

Agriculture is Santa Barbara County's leading industry, strawberries its top crop for 22 consecutive years, and the valley floor is fields and the dirt roads between them. After a winter rain - nearly all of the year's 13.95 inches fall November through April - a pickup with a wheel off a field road into soft ground is winch-out and recovery from soft sand, mud or a ditch: a controlled pull, then a tow only if something broke. Sand at the Guadalupe-Nipomo Dunes is the same work on a different bottom.

The fog is the marine layer, not tule fog: stratus pushed in off the cold ocean, held down by a temperature inversion, and it can sit for days. A car on a fog-wet shoulder is hard to see: hazards on, everyone well back. The Move Over law, CVC 21809, makes the drivers behind you change lanes or slow for a stopped tow truck with amber lights, and since January 1, 2026, for any stopped vehicle with its hazards on.

Santa Maria Tow Truck prices a tow on the call as a single figure, before a truck moves, from four things: distance, flatbed or wheel-lift, time on scene, and any winching or extra labor before the hook goes on. If what we find is not what was described - an all-wheel-drive badge on a car called two-wheel drive - you hear the new figure before the extra work starts.

California sets no statewide dollar cap on a tow you call for yourself; the price is the quote you agree to. What the state fixes is the tow you did not ask for. Under CVC 22658 a private-property charge is excessive if it exceeds the local law-enforcement rotation rate, which the CHP approves per Area and does not publish; the charge is capped at half the regular tow if you return after hook-up but before the car leaves; storage is one day if you claim the car within 24 hours; and cash or a bank credit card must be accepted.

CVC 22651.07 says what an itemized invoice must show: dispatch, arrival and completion times, each charge on its own line, storage days, any gate fee and who directed the tow. The rest is under how we quote a tow before the truck rolls.
